Mindfulness
I was trained by Mindful Schools and have worked with urban youth in TK-5th grades for the past several years.
The foundation of the program that I teach is about being present and paying attention to what is happening in the now: our emotions, body sensations, thoughts (pleasant or unpleasant), our breathing and heart rate, all without judgement.
I have found that mindfulness practice brings patience, calm, awareness, gratitude, and compassion to the students who are better able to navigate whatever is going on for them. It is an opportunity to practice the skill of being with the unpleasant which is a part of life that we often try to avoid. The effects of this practice can be felt when you walk into a room of young people who are practicing and this energy can be carried out into the world.
The students gain a tool that they can use any where and at any time in their lives.
